Tattoo Aftercare

Once you’ve leave the Tattoo parlor it’s critical that in the first few days and weeks that you take some extra care to prolong the life of your Tattoo.  By all means consult your tattoo artist for the expert guidance for the right aftercare of your tattoo, including any special requirements for your specific piece of art.

Since you have gone to the trouble of carefully selecting the Tattoo Design that you like, the location on your body for the Tattoo, perhaps choosing the write Tattoo artist and sitting through the process of getting the Tattoo, you would thereafter more than likely want to preserve your Tattoo with some good aftercare. To help you along the way with your Tattoo aftercare we have compiled some information of what you can do to care for your Tattoo and what you shouldn't do.

We’ll start with the do not list:-

  • Don’t expose the tattoo to direct sunlight.
  • Don’t swim or soak in a sauna or bathtub for two weeks.
  • Don’t let dirty clothing touch your tattoo.
  • Don’t apply alcohol, Vaseline, lanolin or petroleum based products.
  • Don’t rub, scratch or pick at the tattoo.
  • Don’t re-bandage the tattoo.

Now what to do:

A tattoo might bleed a little within the first few hours. There is a fair chance that the Tattoo Artist will ask you to keep the Tattoo bandaged overnight or at least for some hours. You might find that the gauze of the bandage sticks to the skin, if this happens use cold water until it comes loose, then remove with care.
Once the bandaged is removed and exposed, to remove the blood, wash it in cold water and softly apply antibacterial with your fingers, but not with a cloth.  Thereafter pat the skin dry with a clean towel and wait about 15 minutes before applying a thin layer of Tattoo Goo or the like. Do this for about 4 times a day over the next week or more. Don’t overdo it on the Tattoo Goo when applying, allow the skin to breath, otherwise colors may leach.

Usually somewhere between about a week or 2, the tattoo may start to peel and scab like sunburn tends to do. It’s important that you leave the skin alone and DO not peel or pick the skin.  Let it fall of by itself when applying Tattoo Goo or whilst washing the area.  New skin will eventually replace the peeled skin and any color that may have faded will return once the skin has healed.
The Tattoo area may be a little sensitive after a few weeks, but the scabbing should be gone. Persist with cleaning the area and applying Tattoo Goo to help ensure good Tattoo aftercare.

Try to keep the Tattoo out of the sun over the next few months to avoid fading.  Thereafter always use a strong sunscreen protection  when in the sun, but ideally keep sunbathing to a minimum.
